>Rumination on Hollywood writers' strike:
In this corner we have the underdogs, Hollywood writers--in this corner, greedy studio CEOs

Writers are the lifeblood of TV and film--so, compensate them for Internet distribution (period)

Reasoning from a third party (me):
  • First off, the internet has low distribution costs, so there's room for money to be made and for everybody to be happy (i.e. viewers, writers, producers)
  • Without their creative input you may have to revert back to silent films
  • Everyone has a right to compensation for their creative manifestations, so what gives studio CEOs the right to distribute writer content on the net without a plan to share the profits
This seems to be a matter of greed and stubbornness on the part of the studios. Former CEO of Disney, Michael Eisner, may say that the market for re-distribution of content on the net is yet to be profitable and that writers have been "premature" to push for compensation in the digital realm, but more often than not, people are turning to the net for entertainment.

If users aren't willing to pay for content, advertisers have and will be backing these new business models on the net as they have for all other media (i.e. newspapers, magazines, television). There will be money to be made, just don't forget to compensate those that write the stories that make us laugh and cry.
